Children's Television of Your Parents' and/or Grandparents' Era

Bothered re-posting this since I've got a few interested people willing to forsake precious hours on material so out-of-left-field and far too immature!

Theremin!

Some people, no matter how much evidence you give them, will refuse to accept the truth set before them.

I've always been fascinated by this silly instrument. It's the perfect intersection of geek and artist, and in a very noli me tangere kinda way. I even had plans (ha ha) to build my own that fell short when my Telefunken catalog did not show up.

(I did get to have a wonderful conversation with Phil York about the theremin back in 2004 and I wish I had recorded it. If you have a time machine, please contact me.)

But, with this odd instrument in mind, here's some fun videos that explain why this is so great.

This is where most people know that sound from.

Or here.

Jerry Lewis, easily confused.

Clara Rockmore, whose fingering technique is still in use today.

Other techniques get you a different sound.

It also helps if you TURN IT ON.

THERIMEME!

I'm not even going to get into the daxophone or waterphone, but I should.

Wow, there's a jingle you'll never get out of your head.

For me, this is the sound of unemployment (or being home sick from school). Along with "Perry Mason" and "Hawaii 5-O" themes, nothing will bring back the taste of ramen quicker than that theme.

OH MY GOD, THEY DO BATHROOMS. I'm getting rid of that pink tile TODAY.

Ah, the 90s...before we had all that fancy CGI.

And THAT tells you how long these guys have been around.

Yeah. That's what happened. It's kind of like watching a childhood pet get old and pass on.

Oh, I can't leave you on a down-note!

Dr. Strangelove in Dallas

If you are going to be in the Dallas, Texas area this Sunday, you should try to come to the Texas Theater on Jefferson for a special showing of Dr. Strangelove. Terry Southern's son, Nile, will be there.

And if you can't make it out, at least watch it.

Ray Milland on a bender

There are movies where you're a witness. You coldly watch the actors as they act out the story for your amusement. And then there are movies that work their way under your skin.

Billy Wilder's The Lost Weekend somehow sneaks up on you and before you know it you're breaking out in a cold sweat. Ray Milland's dee tee's are like a dog bite. If you've ever overindulged you can remember that feeling when you look at Milland's eyes.

Strong stuff. I need a chaser.

Nighty night, my dearies....

When I was a wee bairn, I had a picture in my bedroom--over the bed, in fact--that had the following prayer:

From ghoulies and ghosties
And long-leggedy beasties
And things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord, deliver us!

And this was surrounded by illustrations of those awfy critters.

The video above was written and voiced by Kathleen O'Rourke. Interesting lady. I'll wager she had a similar picture in her room.

This is as far as I go on this one.

You can tell she's upper-class because she paints with a raised pinky.

And, in the end, it is a salvation story.

I saw it in the theaters when it came out. It still makes me cry to this day.

We had drama and you didn't notice

We had a little to-do this last week with someone who re-posted our entire content.

That has, since that time, been taken care of.

Dan pointed me to the site that was re-posting our stuff. I set to work and put together *.xls spreadsheets that showed the offender and their original source-work. Thursday night, I discovered i had saved the files in *xls (95) format and they were useless. I sent the following email.

The files I sent for 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2011 are no good. I see that format removed the links. I'm very tired and I'll recreate those files later.

Nonetheless: ALL of the content on http://theanimedreamland.blogspot.com/ for the years 04, 05, 06, and 07 is stolen from http://animehel.blogspot.com/

2008, 2009, and 2010, they branch out and steal content from http://animesentinel.blogspot.com/ , http://sameera-freewallpapers.blogspot.com/, http://mangamovie-review.blogspot.com/, http://animemangalovers2011.blogspot.com/, and http://free-download-anime.blogspot.com/ .

2008, 2009, and 2010 re-post content from two blogs that have been deleted due to violation of the TOS (any post that starts DOWNLOAD, PC, PS2, or XBOX).

I don't know where the the Spanish language posts were stolen from.

The owner of the offending site, "mistalovers sense" also has a blog on http://animemangatrooper.blogspot.com/ . This tries to redirect to kumplublogger.com . http://dragonxtattoos.blogspot.com, another site run by mistalovers sense has already been removed.

http://celebreasty.blogspot.com/ steals most of its content from http://black-celebrities.blogspot.com/

I am tired and irritable. I know you are doing your job and I appreciate that. You have to make sure that you're not taking down content that has no business being taken down. I can't help but appreciate that you have a system that you must go through, to be legally protected. I understand that's why you need a list of the URLs and not just someone pointing fingers and saying "Make it stop!" If I were on the other end, I would be so happy that is the case.

So. I'll recreate the files, as you need them. It will take a bit for me to do so and I'm worried that someone will go looking for the original content and find themselves on a copy that installs malware to their system. We've notified our readers on what's going on; we even removed the link to the offending site once we realized what it was trying to do (because not all of our readers have a decent browser with protective plug-ins).

I'm disappointed, but I understand how this has to be handled, for your protection. Once I've had some rest, I'll take another stab at it and send you what you legally require. This is just a heads-up for what's going on.
Friday, I recreated the files for 2004-2007 and sent them in *.html format. After about 20 minutes, I receivecd the following email:
In accordance with the DMCA, we have completed processing your
infringement complaint and the content in question no longer appears on
the following URL(s):

http://theanimedreamland.blogspot.com

Please let us know if we can assist you further.
Now, I had sent messages to the other blog owners to let them know what was going on, as well as a link to the form for filing a complaint.

I don't know what took the site down: my passionate and tired missive, the *html files I sent on Friday, or complaints from other blog owners.

Who cares? It's taken care of. We just have to keep our eyes open if it happens again.

Le pouding à l'arsenic

A sale on lobster found this video for me. Allow me to explain:

The grocery store down the street is having a sale on lobster (they send me emails) and I thought I'd try a new dish, so I was looking for the scene where Peter Lorre orders a lobster thermidor, because I knew the video had the recipe in the comments. Sadly, I did not find it.

But I did find a bunch of other Peter Lorre clips and I've been on a bit of an interest binge, so I was watching those and found this video.

That video is a little meh, but I like the tune, and I've also been on an electro-swing kick for a few weeks now, so that sent me to this video, which starts off very strong but becomes an eventual and convoluted mess.

I was curious about the band and found this bizarre gem. I imagine if a group of memes ever formed a band, that is the kind of video they would make.

It turns out, they aren't memes at all but actually French. They also put together this atrocity. I might enjoy that kind of repetition if I had 80 mg of MDMA in my system (and it would not hurt if it was the mid-90s again, but that's another story). I got mad watching the video because it wasn't going anywhere and I kept seeing the same orphan frame every three bars, so I decided to look up the source material.

Looking at it now, the memes didn't have much to work with.

Now I want to watch Tales of Terror with The Black Cat again.

This line had us laughing for years.

In for a penny, in for a pound....

SCIENCE!

This last one? Actually good.

BONUS:

Just because I think it's funny. HA HA HA.

Wooooo! Syndication!

Check it out! We've been picked up for re-broadcast by Anime Dream Land! (ED: link removed because the site will redirect you to malware if given the chance.)

If we can get four other blogs to rebroadcast our content, I get a ten-speed!

The more pop-ups they use, the better. That's ad-space, baby! That's revenue, and that's how you make money on the web.

By the way, here's the form to take down that kind of thing. It has to be done a post at a time, so it's a HUGE pain in the ass, but it works quickly.

The advice, "Be kind to your parents at tax-time," is the best part of this video, I think.

Let's get some edutainment on this one:

What's interesting to me (and the "Money Rock!" episodes came out in the 90s), is where the U.S. was fiscally during that time. This was before the dot-bomb but at the end of the Cold War.

And you can tell how dated this one is from the public phone. This also pre-dates the repeal of the Glass–Steagall Act and the deregulation of derivatives.

I wonder if they still show these. I've heard there are no more Saturday Morning cartoons, due to cable. How much does cable cost these days? Do you still pay to watch commercials?

Innovation is generally what gets us out of these scrapes. I do feel bad for the 100 men that the gin put out of work.

As well as new ideas and new ways of seeing things, which is what makes this such a great country.

I do like that Congress gets out of a clown-car.

Flight of Dragons

Ah, the epic battle between John Ritter and James Earl Jones. It's amazing how many of the videos related to it have embedding disabled.

Danno and I were discussing The Never Ending Story, which he was too old to enjoy, but I saw in the theaters. I even read the book! Good times.

But I remember I was in Vancouver when I was reading the book, and we rented Flight of Dragons. As I was young enough to enjoy The Never Ending Story, I was young enough to enjoy this as well.

(What started the conversation? This adorable little fox-on-stilts here, and how this picture reminded me of this.)
